Members,
The Big River Coalition offers the attached PRESS RELEASE to insure our members along with the Press receive the comprehensive comments offered at the Channel Deepening Celebration held on August 16, 2022.
As the Executive Director of the Big River Coalition, I personally wanted to thank the Board and the membership of the Big River Coalition, the Louisiana Maritime Association, members of the federal and state delegations from Louisiana and across the Mississippi River and Tributaries and the representatives of our government agencies. The deepening of the Mississippi River Ship Channel to 50 feet is a historic effort that will take several more years to complete at the upriver limits of the Port of Greater Baton Rouge.
The first 195 miles of the Ship Channel have been mechanically deepened (dredged) to depths greater than 50 feet, although only 50 miles of that reach had to be dredged, between New Orleans and Venice (LA) the Ship Channel is naturally deeper that 50 feet. There is no doubt this project can be confusing but the simplified message is the Ship Channel can accommodate vessel with drafts of 50 feet to the Huey P. Long Bridge (Mile 106 Above Head of Passes – again remember to add the 20 miles of Southwest Pass to arrive at 126 miles of Ship Channel). From the Huey P. Long Bridge to Mile 175 Above Head of Passes the channel is reduced by one foot to 49 feet which will most likely remain unchanged until a sufficient number of vessels with drafts of 49 feet can transit upriver of the Huey P. Long.
There has been a lot of praise and attention given to me personally in my role as the Executive Director of the Big River Coalition, rest assured I have not accomplished anything without wide and greatly appreciated support.
Please see the attached for complete details and kindly remember there is much more to do to complete this historic effort.
